Eric Hartwell, a fugitive sex offender in Colorado who apparently cut off his ankle monitor, and fled from his group home, was arrested in Norfolk, Virginia.
Hartwell was convicted of raping a child in 1991, according to the Colorado sex offender registry.
He was then sentenced to only five years in prison.
After his release, he failed to register as a sex offender, which resulted in him being placed into a halfway house in Washington State, in the year 2009.
It was a week after his placement that he removed his monitor and fled.
In my opinion, the simple fact that Hartwell's ankle monitor was that easy to remove, completely blows my mind.
Even besides his accessibility to remove the monitor, I believe he should have served a longer time period, considering the extremity of his acts.
It is ridiculous to me, to think that there are "crimes" committed, that are way less severe, and a longer sentence is served, but an adult male rapes a child and he gets locked away for a couple of years.
The judicial system, in my opinion, is more than a bit backwards, and a situation such as this one completely supports that idea.
